Using OSMO in Speech & Language Therapy

Updated: May 17, 2021

Hi everyone!

So, after seeing a bunch of social media posts, I am officially jumping on the OSMO bandwagon!

PIN this post for later.

WHAT IS OSMO?

OSMO is a piece of technology that allows the user to manipulate objects in the real world to interact with the digital world.

You can purchase the kits that come with objects/games, or you can purchase the base on it's own. I personally chose to purchase the iPad base on it's own for now, which also comes with the reflector (i.e. red piece on top of the iPad) and 2 digital games (Masterpiece & Newton).

HOW DO I USE OSMO IN SPEECH THERAPY?

You can use an OSMO as a low-cost document camera! When using is as a document camera, you can do things like :

  • Read a book - track the words as you read, provide visual cues as you point to words or pictures, have students with an AAC device request to turn the page

  • Sensory Bins - play I spy, search for objects that begin with a target speech sound, engage in conversation about object you find

  • Legos/Blocks - use as reinforcement, have your students give you directions on what to build, work on prepositions or basic concepts

  • Toys - play with toys to target joint attention, have your students give you directions on what to build, work on prepositions or basic concepts, play with toys similar to what your student is playing with on their end and model different ways to play/manipulate the items

  • AAC - your students can see you point to words/icons on a core board or sentence strips

  • Visuals - use your visual cues that you have printed by having the visuals displayed on half of your screen and the activity displayed on the other half (there is a post about this in the 5 Day OSMO Challenge Group). This way you can still visually cue while working on this speech sounds, sentence formulation, question formulation, etc.

  • Articulation - use your mini objects, show your Bjorem cue cards, use your BINGO daubers and stamp out 100 trials

  • Games - pair a game like Pop the Pig with this customizable spinner from Toy Theater

Check back in a couple weeks for some pictures and more ideas on using the OMSO in therapy.

Stay safe and healthy! Positive vibes going out to everyone as we start our back to school journeys!
